Last week the BBC Radio 4 program, ‘In Our Time’ aired a segment on the emergence of geology as a scientific discipline from ancient times through to the development of the Geological Society of London in the early 1800s. Presenter Melvyn Bragg and his guests examine ideas such as Da Vinci’s idea that fossilised sea shells high in the Alps were actually once part of living organisms, quite a novel idea at the time.
