Sometimes the truth really is stranger than fiction. And when you study things at the microscopic level it is stranger than science fiction. As a biogeochemist I can’t ignore biology. I work from an Earth Sciences department where all the wonders of biology are often distilled into two words: vital effects. When you work with biogenic archives i.e corals, forams etc and you can’t explain the offset you are seeing in your results…it’s vital effects, now let’s move on. Well for those of you who don’ t appreciate the complexity of vital effects, and what it might mean for the interpretation of your results, then have a look at biology up close. It’s remarkable. As is the animation….
